Tinpan Orange Hit Back Strong With Fifth Effort Love Is A Dog

Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey and Madonna, what do all of these legendary artists have in common? At one time or another, they have all sung the theme to the classic spy franchise James Bond 007. It’s a hot sweltering February afternoon and the temperature gauge reads 39 degrees as I begin to chat to Emily Lubitz about Tinpan Orange’s stellar fifth effort Love Is A Dog. Their latest single is just like the weather, Rich Man puts you right there on the tropic island or in the luxurious casino at the poker table. Opening with tremolo guitar, immediately you are immersed in a world of espionage and super villains and you feel like you are trying to stop a super power from unleashing missiles on the world. It’s been the best part of four years since we’ve heard new music from Melbourne’s premier indie roots band, and Rich Man the first taste of the record is definitely a welcome return.

Having worked on the new material for the best part of four years, it’s easy to hear relief in Lubitz’s voice as we chat about what is their most ambitious and creative album to date. “It feels really good at the moment, because if there was something that I wanted to change, it’s too late. It’s been a long time incubated and we’ve been recorded it for more than a year and some of the songs are a couple of years old and it’s just really exciting to have it out in the world finally and be able to see what everyone thinks of it.”

It’s a simple concept to think about however if I was on the selection panel for choosing the next Bond theme, Rich Man would definitely be on the top of the list. Eerie Hitchcock-esque string arrangements and atmospheric piano glides in and out of the track. It’s a hot summers day and you are sipping a local glass of merlot as the sun cascades down the cliffs of Manarola on the coast of the Italian seaside. There is just something so cinematic and breathtakingly beautiful about the main single. One of the highlights to Love Is A Dog, is the band’s choice of producer in Adam Seizer based in Portland, Oregon. “Adam does some fantastic work and has helped craft albums from M. Ward, She and Him and stuff like that. It’s crazy how the world can be, because we just sent the tracks to him online. He put his magic on them and he really hit the mark, I think, we were really happy about how the tracks turned out.”

Unleashing the new material at their performances at Port Fairy Folk Festival over the labour day weekend in early March, the tunes have been exceptionally well received and it is all credit to the band that have followed up with another killer album. “Having worked on this album for the best part of 18 months straight, we are so excited to be able to get out on the road and tour it. I can’t wait to get out and play some regional shows which was a deliberate decision in the planning. Bands seem to neglect touring to the smaller towns and they often create a more intimate vibe. We cannot wait.”

Definitely a contender for local album of the year, be sure to check out this record and hit up their Melbourne launch at the Toff in Town on May 7th.
