RUFUS HIT THE TOP ONCE AGAIN WITH BLOOM

When I get onto the phone to chat with Jon George, keyboardist from RUFUS, the band has just returned from their first tour on the back of their new album Bloom. It seems a little bit upsetting that the US were the first country to experience the new album in the live flesh, but we did get quite a smattering of live performances over the new year with RUFUS playing at the Falls Festival.Talking about the recording process behind Bloom, George relates that the band headed internationally to work on this one. “For the first album, we based ourselves in Sydney and worked away on it and I think we really hit the mark with that one, everyone seemed to really dig the record and to an extent that kind of put the pressure on us to deliver on this one. We headed off to live in Berlin and that put a massive influence on the record. Being so far away from home allowed for us not to be pressured by anyone or anything which allowed for the natural energy of the band to transpire.”

From a few listens through to Bloom it’s easy to hear the trademark sound of the band and that the beats are as luscious as ever this time around. Uploading a few tracks to the internet, Rufus were unsure of how the first album would be received, however one thing led to another and before you know it, they were one of the biggest dance acts in the world. “Things really took off for us after the first record came out.” George said. “We started getting a lot of airplay on Triple J and commercial radio and that allowed for a wider audience to hear our music. We got the opportunity to tour in Europe and the US and that allowed for greater influence to come into the songs I think.”

The writing process for Rufus has always been a collaborative process with the band bringing songs into the band rehearsal space. Having had the opportunity to see the new tunes at Falls Festival over New years, I highly recommend that you get tickets to their shows if you still can. One of the hottest bands in Australia at the moment that seem to be playing a lot of shows around Australia. That said, for a band from Sydney that started out just releasing their music independently, the success that has followed them, couldn’t have happened to a greater bunch of guys.

Check out the new album below and try and see Rufus live you definitely wont regret it. Thank you boys for delivering a definite highlight of Australian music in 2016.
