Kintsugi Review Death Cab For Cutie

Death Cab For Cutie have just released their eighth studio album and it is the first album that marks a change in direction for the band. Not in the sound of the band however in the direction and personnel involved with the project. Chris Walla longtime collaborator and intact producer and founding member of the band called it a day during the recording of this album and so Rich Costey was enlisted by the band to help them out. Having worked with the likes of Frank Turner, Muse and Foster The People, the sound of this album is absolutely fantastic. Right from the first moment of ‘No Room in Frame’ to conclusion in ‘Binary Sea’, Death Cab have really hit the mark with this record.

With lush arrangements and electronic glimmers, these are some of the best songs that the band has produced in its twenty year career. ‘Black Sun’ sees Gibbard letting go of the marriage to former wife Zooey Deschanel and it rollicks along. As a mid tempo paced song, it’s catchy and you are able to sing along within the third or fourth listen to the track. There are other highlights on this album that make this quite an enjoyable listen ‘Ghosts of Beverley Drive’ and ‘Little Wanderer’ are two tracks that have been on repeat on my iTunes most played for the past few weeks.

The crowning glory to this album however is ‘You’ve Haunted Me Your Whole Life’. Whilst the band are gearing up to play festivals and tour around on the back of this album. There is (unfortunately) no live footage of the band playing the track. However! There is this awesome cover of the track on Youtube by Halfmast Giraffe. Although some acoustic covers of people sitting in their bedroom isn’t riveting viewing, this is worth three minutes of your time.

With a little more digging, here I found Ben Gibbard playing ‘Ghosts of Beverly Drive’ Acoustically!

In the next week we will know if Death Cab For Cutie are on the bill for Splendour in the Grass which means, drum roll please………….

SIDESHOWS! 🙂 Check back here to hear the news first!
