Holy Holy

Tim Carroll from Melbourne indie rockers Holy Holy is sitting in a hotel room in Sweden, when my call is patched through to him as we begin to chat about their debut record When The Storms Would Come. Released last week, the record is a step up for the duo from their previous EPs and cements them as one of the hottest bands in Australia and one to watch over the next couple of years.

Having returned from Europe playing Primavera Sound in Barcelona and The Great Escape festival in Brighton, as you would expect Carroll is full of stories as we begin to talk. Although they didn’t get the chance to rub shoulders with any of the big headline acts, it was an unforgettable experience none the less as Carroll relates.

“It was a wonderful experience and in a matter of speaking, we were thrown into the deep end. The Great Escape was the first show on the run and it was nerve-wracking to blow the dust off, but such a great vibe. We played in underground clubs in Brighton and it was a lot of fun. Primavera Sound and Barcelona is the best experience I’ve had. Tapas, totally baking hot and cheap wine. It’s totally epic with the programming of that festival, and very brave. It was an honour to be asked to play and seeing The Strokes live was something I’ll never forget their first record is just killer from start to finish.”

Meeting in South East Asia when they were teaching English, the formula for the band of Holy Holy was always one that was going to succeed right from the start. Moving to Europe, it was when Carroll was demoing in his bedroom that Oscar Dawson came across and helped work on a few tracks that the foundations for the record we have today was established.

“You Cannot Call For Love Like A Dog, is a track that I began demoing in my bedroom in Sweden. Written on a little Martin acoustic guitar, I always knew that that song had something special to it, on the record we really were able to let it rip. You can hear that in Oscar’s guitar solo towards the end.It was eighties and quite cheesy but there was just something really powerful about that from the start.”

Heading out on the road in support of the record throughout August and September, the band are set to play at the Workers Club in Geelong on the 3rd of September. Chatting about the inclusion of both regional and metropolitan shows, Carroll insists it’s important to never forget the little towns along the way. “I can’t wait to play some regional dates and I can’t wait to get to WA. It’s been really fun to get to know that part of the country when we have toured there on our own backs as well as with Boy and Bear. It’s so far away from everywhere, but because it’s so segregated, shows there are absolutely mental and I can’t wait to head out on the road and showcase this record that we have been working so incredibly hard on for 2 years. We’ve started work on the follow up so hopefully we have some more new music for you real soon.”
