It was at this time that Gilliam started experimenting with animation. His work was just that, experimental and probably more artistic expression than anything else. He and friends used to go to film studios and gather up any blank film stock they could find in the trash. They would take it home and draw on the frames. 8 Gilliam worked at Help! until financial issues shut the magazine down. He then moved back to California, where he worked in advertising for a while before he jumped at an opportunity in 1967 to move with his girlfriend (a reporter) to Europe.

One day he was presented with an idea for a fumetti — a story about a man who lusted after a doll. Not only did he love the idea, but he also thought that he knew the perfect comedian, one who had the perfect mix of gravity and goofy. Just a few weeks earlier he had seen the Broadway production of the Cambridge Circus, a revue from England. Among the performers in the show was one John Cleese. During a down period for the show, Cleese agreed to star in the fumetti, and in that a seed was planted for much greater things.
